shiho's quilted blanket.

 

I received a 1937 Featherweight vintage Singer sewing machine for my birthday from Rain :D

The first sewing machine project I started was a quilted baby blanket for my cousin's baby, Shiho. It was his first birthday so it was a great excuse to make a gift.

I got the instructions from Martha Stewart. Her instructions aren't very good, especially if you're a first time quilter like me. There are directions like, "miter the corners". I had no idea how to miter the corners of a quilt but was able to find plenty of Youtube tutorials.

I bought the fabric from Purl SoHo. I could spend hours at that store because they had plenty of cute printed fabrics to choose from.

I embroidered a name tag for a personal touch. Not too shabby for first time quilt! Hope my cousin likes it.

sock cat christmas ornaments.

I was scrambling to get my ornaments done for the 5th Annual Holiday Ornament Swap. I seem to continue with the same theme and make mini sock animals. I wasn't planning on doing so this year and try something different but I ended up making a sock cat:

Rain likes pineapple so I used Giada Di Laurentii's pineapple cake recipe.
Helpful tip: Must wear low cup top for this cake to come out proper.

I learned a very helpful tip:
After baking the cake, place in fridge for half hour. This firms up the cake and prevents it from ripping apart when applying frosting. Frost a thin crumb layer and place in fridge again. This helps for a smoother final spread. After a half hour, frost a final layer for smooth finish.

I was very proud of the frosting job on this cake :)
